Meet Valentina

The Italian Greyhound AKA ‘Iggy’ has been said to be the first dog purposely bred for companionship, so it seems fitting that one should work as a therapy dog.  However, despite being incredibly affectionate, intelligent and sensitive dogs, the Iggy tends to be known as a timid and shy breed who prefers only familiar humans.

There are sometimes exceptions to the rule – Valentina, or ‘Tina’ has always been a little more outgoing than most Iggies and was lucky to receive excellent socialisation as a young puppy with adults, teens, children, cats/kittens, farm animals and other dogs.  Early socialisation is essential to avoid overly timid or anxious behaviours.

Tina is very social with clients – she adores greeting them at the door and snuggling up next to or in the lap of clients during sessions.  Tina can be an active part of your or your child’s therapy plan, or if preferred, can simply have a nap under her special blanket and let the humans take the lead.

Tina grew up on a farm for the first 6 months of her life and apparently used to curl up each night with a hairless cat!  She was chosen from her litter as a show dog but at 6 months of age her breeder noticed she wasn’t ‘tall enough to win’ and one of her ears would stick straight up (not OK in the world of dog showing) so she was put up for adoption.

Given her quirky personality and social nature, Megan saw great potential in Tina as a companion and therapy dog.

Tina’s birth name of ‘Hope – Wishing on a Star’ seemed a little too fancy for daily use.  Megan was first sent a photo of her on the 14th February – Valentine’s Day – so the Italian name of Valentina was chosen.

While Italian Greyhounds are intelligent dogs, their intelligence is often described as self-serving – Tina uses her intelligence to get what she wants but conveniently ‘forgets’ things when it suits her (she is able to use her doggy door but sometimes ‘forgets’ how to when it’s windy or raining).

Tina’s favourite things include burrowing under blankets, treats,  squeaky toys, hiking or beach adventures (as long as there is no swimming involved), going to work, car rides, zoomies and being chased by other dogs.  Tina very much dislikes vacuum cleaners, loud noises, cold weather, windy days and the cool setting on the air conditioner!
